Elected Leader of The Year
Senator James Skoufis
Since joining the State Assembly in 2013, and as our current State Senator, James Skoufis has set the standard for constituent services and problem solving. In the Senate, he’s taken on corporate welfare, fought corruption, and worked to make our elections more fair and accessible—proving himself one of the most productive legislators in New York.
But James stands apart because he makes our local fights his fights. Since his first Senate campaign in 2018, he’s shown Democrats how to win competitive campaigns in tough districts that span most of Orange County, outperforming the top of the ticket year after year—without ever sacrificing his core values or working-class agenda.
And when he’s not on the ballot, James is helping us build the bench—recruiting candidates, advising local campaigns, and strengthening our committee, because he knows that when the party is strong every campaign is stronger. His leadership even gained national attention when he brought his grassroots, “compete everywhere” approach to the DNC Chair race after the 2024 election. Today, as a member of the DNC executive committee, he continues to shape our party nationally while fighting for us here at home.

NYSUT Candidates for the Orange County Legislature
At a time when far-right politicians across the country are attacking public education, book-banning, and undermining teachers, these candidates represent something different: working-class champions who have already dedicated their lives to cultivating the next generation—and who are now ready to fight for all of our families in county government.
For the first time in a generation, Democrats are contesting more County Legislative seats than Republicans—and leaders like Stephanie Powell, Michael Cox, Sparrow Tobin, Virginia Scott, Jonathan Redeker, and Maria May embody what our campaign across the county is all about: leaders who understand our communities because they come from and serve our communities every day.

Maria Ingrassia
Maria has dedicated decades to public service and Democratic politics, from organizing workers with SEIU to serving as Mid-Hudson Director for Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney and now as Director of Special Projects for Congressman Pat Ryan. As Chair, she spearheaded the rebirth of the Middletown Democrats, strengthening our presence and building grassroots power in the community.
Her leadership has empowered local committees, uplifted working families, and ensured Orange County Democrats have a strong voice in every fight that matters.
